Well now, howdy folks! Howe Weird here, and I’ve got a little tale from our very own backyard, Chattanooga, that’s sure to make you chuckle.
It seems a local gentleman, 42 years young, decided to make a rather unique statement down at the Hamilton County courthouse recently. He had himself a minor speeding ticket, you see, a hundred-dollar fine. Now, most folks would just swipe a card or hand over a few bills. Not this fellow, bless his heart.
Instead, he rolled on up with a hefty bucket, brimming with exactly ten thousand pennies! That’s right, a solid hundred dollars’ worth of copper, all to settle his debt. You can just imagine the look on the court officials’ faces when he presented his unconventional payment. Initially, they weren’t too keen on accepting it, citing the sheer disruption and the time it would take to count all those little coins. I reckon they pictured an afternoon of endless clinking.
But after a brief pow-wow and a quick call to a supervisor, common sense (or maybe just good old Southern hospitality) prevailed. They agreed to process the payment. It took two dedicated clerks nearly three hours – *three hours!* – to meticulously count every single penny. All the while, our determined penny-payer was reportedly smiling, stating simply, ‘They said I could pay in U.S. currency, didn’t they?’ He certainly proved his point, didn’t he?
I bet those clerks wished they had a handy coin counter, or maybe even one of those clever little storage solutions you can find on Temu, just to make sense of all those copper circles. It just goes to show you, sometimes folks find the most inventive ways to pay a debt, or perhaps, just to get their two cents in. Makes you wonder what ingenious payment method will pop up next, doesn’t it?
