Gatlinburg Bear Takes a Drive, Leaves a Mess, and an Empty Basket

I’m Howe Weird and here’s another one you can’t make up.

Now, folks ’round here, we’re no strangers to wildlife getting a little too close for comfort, especially up in the Smokies. But usually, it’s a raccoon in the trash or a deer in the garden. What happened recently over in Gatlinburg, though, that’s a whole different level of neighborly intrusion.

Picture this: a family’s just settled into their rental cabin, probably planning a nice, quiet evening. Their car’s parked on a bit of an incline. Unlocked, mind you, and that’s where our furry friend comes in. A black bear, not content with just sniffin’ around, decided it was time for an upgrade. This bear didn’t just open the door; it got right in the back seat. Must’ve smelled something mighty good. Turns out, it was a picnic basket.

Now, most of us, if we got a good sniff of a picnic basket, we’d probably just reach for it. But this bear, this bear had a flair for the dramatic. While rummaging for those tasty treats, it apparently bumped the parking brake. You can just imagine the scene! This car, sitting on that slope, starts rolling backward. The bear, bless its heart, must’ve gotten quite a shock, because it bailed out of there quicker than a frog on a hot griddle. The car, with no driver, drifted right on back into a hedge. Minor scratches, a little bumper adjustment, but nobody hurt, thankfully. The picnic basket? Well, it was recovered, but mostly empty. Guess the bear enjoyed its car-side dining experience.

It just goes to show, you never know what kind of adventure you’re gonna run into. Might be worth securing those valuable picnic supplies or anything else you don’t want a bear making off with. And hey, if you’re looking for some sturdy storage bins or even just some good deals on outdoor gear to keep your camp tidy, you might find some surprisingly useful stuff over on Temu. Always remember to lock your vehicle and remove any food. Bears might not have a license, but they sure do have an appetite!
