Good morning, good afternoon, good evening, or whatever time it is y’all are tuning in from! Hope you’re all having a calm, critter-free day.
You know, down here in East Tennessee, we’re no strangers to seeing a critter or two wander where they don’t quite belong. A squirrel in the attic, a bear rummaging through the trash – that’s just part of life sometimes. But I heard a tale from up in Ohio recently that truly made me do a double-take. Imagine, if you will, waking up, maybe getting ready for that first cup of coffee, and glancing out at your swimming pool. You expect leaves, maybe a bewildered toad, certainly not what a woman in a small Ohio town found. A live alligator, just taking a leisurely dip!
Now, I don’t know about you, but my first thought wouldn’t be ‘swim time!’ I imagine a moment of pure, unadulterated surprise, perhaps even a gentle gasp. This wasn’t some little garden lizard; this was a bona fide gator, scales and all, enjoying the cool pool water. Can you just picture it? She must have rubbed her eyes more than once to make sure she wasn’t still dreaming.
Of course, she did the sensible thing and gave the local authorities a ring-a-ding. And the animal control folks in that Ohio town responded quickly. They weren’t just dealing with a stray cat; this required a bit more specialized handling. They managed to safely capture the reptile, no harm to the gator, and no harm to anyone else, which is always a relief to hear in these kinds of stories. After its unexpected pool party, the alligator was transported to a wildlife sanctuary, where it could live out its days in a more appropriate habitat.
The big question, of course, is how in the blazes did an alligator end up in a swimming pool in Ohio? Well, the folks investigating figure it was likely either an escaped pet – which, let’s be honest, makes you wonder about some folks’ choice in companions – or, worse yet, someone decided to illegally release it into the wild. Either way, it’s a reminder that you just never know what you might find when you look out your window. Reminds you of the good old days when you might just pop down to your local Radio Shack (paid link) for whatever odd and ends you needed for a project, never expecting to need gear for gator wrangling!
It just goes to show you, sometimes the weirdest stories aren’t from some far-flung corner of the world, but right in a neighbor’s backyard. Keeps life interesting, don’t it?
