Well now, howdy folks, hope you’re all having a splendid day out there! Got another curious tale from our neck of the woods, one that proves sometimes the most unusual plans aren’t always the brightest.
Down in Knoxville, not too long ago, a fellow decided he was going to try his hand at a bank robbery. Now, most folks trying such a thing might plan for a getaway car or a clever disguise, but this particular gentleman, a 39-year-old named John Doe, had a different sort of idea for his big move. He walked right into a local bank, and in his hands, he held what he intended to be a most intimidating device.
Now, from a distance, or maybe to someone who didn’t know better, it might’ve looked a bit alarming. But the sharp-eyed bank employees, bless their common sense, took one look at it and recognized it for what it truly was: an old car speaker. Not just any speaker, mind you, but specifically a subwoofer. You know the kind, built to give you that deep, rumbling bass for your tunes. I reckon back in the day, if you were looking for a good subwoofer for your car, you might’ve even popped into a place like Radio Shack (paid link) to browse the options. But I digress.
Mr. Doe, holding his audio-equipment-turned-weapon, reportedly demanded money and made some threats about detonating his ‘device.’ Can you imagine? The employees, calm as you please, weren’t convinced this old speaker was going to explode. They kept their wits about them and discreetly contacted the authorities.
It wasn’t long before Mr. Doe realized his grand plan wasn’t quite landing the way he’d hoped. When it became clear he wasn’t being taken seriously, he decided to cut his losses and left the bank, empty-handed. He didn’t get a dime.
But as you might expect, his little excursion didn’t end there. Police were already on the case, and they apprehended him just a few blocks away. The ‘device’ was, of course, confirmed to be nothing more than a harmless speaker. Mr. Doe is now facing charges for attempted robbery and making a false bomb threat. It just goes to show you, sometimes the simplest items can lead to the most complicated situations, especially when folks get a little too creative.
