Well, howdy, folks! Howe Weird here, comin’ at ya from the heart of East Tennessee, ready to spin another yarn that’ll make you scratch your head and maybe even chuckle a bit. Today, we’re talkin’ about value. Now, most folks around here, when they think of something valuable, they might picture a shiny new truck, a good piece of land, or maybe a family heirloom passed down through generations. But what if I told you about a potato?
Not just any potato, mind you, but a photograph of a potato. And not just any photograph, but one that fetched a cool million euros. That’s right, folks, a million euros for a picture of a spud. Roughly $1.08 million USD, if you’re countin’ your pennies at today’s exchange rate. Now, if that don’t make you sit up and take notice, I don’t know what will.
This particular tuber, known to the art world as ‘Potato #345 (2010)’, was captured by the lens of a fellow named Kevin Abosch. He’s a photographer known for his portraits of some mighty high-profile folks, the kind you see on magazine covers and in fancy galleries. But in 2016, it was this simple, stark image of an organic Irish potato, set against a deep black background, that made headlines.
The story goes that the sale wasn’t some big auction house affair. Nope, it happened right there in Abosch’s studio. He was hostin’ a dinner party, as artists are wont to do, and among his guests was an unnamed European businessman. Now, this businessman, he saw that potato photograph, and somethin’ about it just spoke to him. He decided, right then and there, he simply had to have it. And a million euros later, it was his. Just like that.
It makes you wonder, don’t it? What is it about a simple potato, or any piece of art for that matter, that can command such a price? Abosch’s work often delves into themes of identity and value, and I reckon this potato picture certainly got folks thinkin’ about both. It ain’t about the potato itself, of course. It’s about the eye that saw it, the hand that captured it, and the story that grew around it.
Back in my younger days, if you wanted a picture, you either painted it or you got yourself a camera and spent hours in a darkroom, maybe even piecing together some of your own equipment from parts you picked up at a place like ‘RADIO SHACK’. Now, we got phones that take pictures clearer than my eyesight on a good day. But even with all that technology, it’s still the vision, the unique way of seeing the world, that truly makes a photograph stand out. And sometimes, that vision sees a million-dollar potato.
So, next time you’re peeling a potato for dinner, take a good look at it. You never know, you might just be holdin’ a masterpiece in your hand. Or at least, a very tasty dinner.
