Yellowstone Crew Finds 280 Hats and More in Geyser Country

Howe Weird and little Pip in 3D cinematic style watch Yellowstone workers collect hats and visitor items near geysers

Howdy, good folks, Howe Weird here, and Pip has just announced that if he ever loses a hat in Yellowstone, he expects a full search party, a brass band, and at least one apology from the wind. I told him park workers already have enough headwear to worry about.

According to UPI, Yellowstone National Park says its geology team has pulled a record-setting amount of visitor debris from the park’s hydrothermal areas this year. That includes more than 20,100 pieces of paper and plastic trash, 5,600 rocks and sticks, and over 280 hats. Around here, losing one ball cap is an annoyance. Losing 280 hats near steaming geysers sounds like the world’s strangest laundry day.

The list gets odder the longer you look at it. Workers found 54 camera lens caps, 47 hair ties, 17 pacifiers, 20 hotel key cards, 42 pencils, 36 pairs of sunglasses, five AirPods, golf tees, an inhaler, and even a single Uno card. Pip says drawing just one Uno card from a geyser sounds like a very specific threat from Mother Nature.

If you are headed outdoors, a simple litter grabber and a snug sun hat with a chin strap might keep your vacation memories from becoming somebody else’s cleanup assignment. The geysers are beautiful, but they are not wishing wells, hat racks, toy boxes, or dental storage units.

The park also reported six Invisalign retainers, fake nails, floss picks, mini race cars, bouncy balls, rubber ducks, Pokemon items, pressed pennies, and a tiny copy of The Vampire Diaries. That is not a lost-and-found drawer. That is a yard sale with steam.

Yellowstone officials reminded visitors that foreign objects can damage hydrothermal features by clogging water supplies, blocking runoff channels, or polluting the area with chemicals and sediment. So let us tip our hats to the cleanup crew, then hold on tight to the hats we have left. Pip says he is sewing a seatbelt into his top hat immediately.
