Good mornin’, neighbors, Howe Weird here, and Pip is currently staring at my bookshelf like he suspects one of my old almanacs may be wanted by the authorities. I told him to relax. Compared with today’s tale, my reading habits are practically punctual.
According to UPI, the Concord Public Library in New Hampshire recently had a patron return a September 1894 issue of The Century Illustrated Monthly. Yes, 1894. That magazine was not just late. It was late through two world wars, the invention of television, the rise of the internet, and several generations of librarians quietly wondering where it went.
The man, identified by the library as John, said the magazine had been in his home for years and he did not know how it landed there in the first place. After hearing that the library had a current freeze on overdue fines, he decided it was finally time to bring the wandering publication home. Pip says that is either responsible citizenship or the slowest spring cleaning in American history.
The library joked that John would not have to pay the $12,055 fine for being 48,220 days overdue. Around my house, I get nervous if a library book rides around in the truck for an extra week. This fellow brought back a magazine old enough to remember when horses judged the traffic.
If you have old papers or magazines tucked away, a few magazine storage sleeves can help keep them from turning into attic confetti. And if you are the sort who likes being prepared for a library run, a sturdy book tote bag may prevent future literary disappearances.
The returned magazine will not go back into regular circulation, but the library said it might be displayed in the Concord Room. That seems right. After 132 years away, it has earned a quiet retirement, a nice shelf, and maybe a little sign that says, “Better late than never.” Pip says if anyone finds his missing button from last Tuesday, he expects the same treatment.
