Alligator Found Wandering at New York Nature Preserve

Howe Weird and little Pip in 3D cinematic style watch rescuers contain a small alligator at a New York nature preserve

Good day, neighbors, Howe Weird here, and Pip has just asked whether nature preserves come with surprise alligator settings. I told him they generally do not, which is exactly why today’s Long Island story made the odd-news shelf.

According to UPI, animal rescuers responded to the Holtsville Ecology Center on New York’s Long Island after an alligator was found wandering loose at the nature preserve. Yes, an alligator. On a trail. In New York. That is the sort of sentence that makes a person check whether their coffee was too strong.

The Strong Island Animal Rescue League said rescuers arrived expecting they might have to wrestle an alligator, but the little reptile was already contained. A group of girls visiting the preserve had found the alligator wandering on a trail and kept it safely contained until the experts arrived. Pip says those young ladies showed more composure than he would have. His plan involved immediate hat evacuation.

Officials believe the animal had apparently been abandoned in the wild, and they made clear that releasing animals like that is a serious problem. It is dangerous for people, dangerous for pets, and often terrible for the abandoned animal, which may not survive where it does not belong.

The alligator was turned over to the New York Department of Environmental Conservation for veterinary care and rehabilitation. That is the best possible ending: no panic, no harm, and the little gator in the hands of people who know what they are doing.

If you enjoy spotting wildlife the safe way, a pair of wildlife binoculars and a field guide are better tools than getting close. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Pip says he is relieved the alligator was small. I told him small alligators become big alligators, which is why nature trails should remain gator-free unless nature itself sent the invitation.
