Arizona Neighbors Rescue Stranded Emu from Canal

Howe Weird and little Pip in 3D cinematic style watch neighbors rescue an emu from an Arizona canal

Good day, neighbors, Howe Weird here, and Pip is studying a picture of an emu with the grave seriousness of a spider who just realized some birds come built like feathered question marks. I told him not to worry. Today’s emu had neighbors on its side.

According to UPI, residents in Gilbert, Arizona, came together after a young emu was spotted struggling in a canal. Now, an emu is not exactly the kind of critter most folks expect to see taking an unscheduled swim in the neighborhood waterway. Around here, that would stop traffic, conversation, and at least one lawn mower.

The bird had been trying to escape the canal when local residents stepped in to help. The rescue ended happily, with the emu safely removed from the water and eventually returned to its owner. Pip says any story that starts with “there is an emu in the canal” and ends with everybody safe deserves a porch toast and maybe a fresh bowl of snacks.

One thing I like about this tale is the neighborly part. Strange news often begins with confusion, but the best ones end with people noticing a problem and doing something kind. Nobody woke up that morning expecting emu duty, but there they were, helping a long-legged bird get back where it belonged.

If you live around pets, livestock, or wandering backyard mysteries, supplies like an animal rescue net or a roomy large pet carrier can be useful in ordinary situations. But with a big, powerful bird like an emu, it is always best to involve the owner or local animal professionals instead of trying to wrangle it like a county fair contestant.

So congratulations to the Arizona neighbors who turned a canal commotion into a happy ending. Pip says he will not be attempting canal rescue training, mostly because his legs are small and his top hat is not water-rated.
