Well hello there, good people! It’s your friendly neighborhood storyteller, Howe Weird, comin’ at you with another head-scratcher from the wide, weird world. Now, I’ve heard plenty of tales about folks accidentally leaving a door unlocked, but this one from Ohio takes the cake, or perhaps, the cookie!
Picture this if you will: it’s early Tuesday morning, the kind of quiet time when most folks are just thinkin’ about that first glorious cup of coffee. But for one family up in Ohio, their peace was shattered not by an alarm clock, but by their home security system blaring out an intruder alert. Now, your mind immediately jumps to, well, a person, doesn’t it? But when they went to investigate, they didn’t find a two-legged trespasser. Nope, what they found was a big, furry, four-legged fella – a black bear, bold as brass, moseying around their kitchen.
Seems this bear had found an unlocked back door and decided to invite himself in for a little early morning snack attack. Can you imagine? You’re expecting to pour some milk on your cereal, and there’s Smokey’s cousin rummaging through your pantry. The family, naturally, called the authorities. While they were waiting, this culinary connoisseur of a bear made himself right at home, sampling the kitchen offerings. According to the family, it developed a particular fondness for their homemade cookies. I reckon if I was a bear, I’d go for homemade cookies too – beats foraging for berries every time!
Now, a lot of folks these days rely on those smart home systems to keep an eye on things, and for good reason. They can certainly give you a heads-up when something’s amiss, whether it’s a package delivery or, well, a bear. But you know, back in the day, before all this high-tech gadgetry, we might’ve had to rely on a good old dog or maybe even just a sturdy lock. Some folks even tinkered with their own alarm systems using parts they could find at a place like Radio Shack (paid link). It just goes to show you, no matter how advanced your security, sometimes the simplest oversight, like an unlocked door, can lead to the wildest of mornings.
Before the officers could arrive and have a word with our furry friend, the bear, having satisfied its sweet tooth, decided its adventure was over and ambled back out the way it came. No harm came to anyone in the house, thankfully, just a kitchen that needed a good scrubbing down and probably a new cookie jar. It’s a good reminder that even in our modern world, nature’s always got a trick or two up its sleeve, ready to surprise us when we least expect it.
