Feathered Funds: Georgia Man Tries to Pay for Groceries with a Live Rooster!

Well howdy there, folks, hope you’re havin’ a mighty fine day wherever you are!

Now, down here in East Tennessee, we appreciate a good story, especially one that makes you pause and consider the finer points of human ingenuity… or lack thereof. This week, a tale fluttered in from our neighbors over in rural Georgia that’s got folks clucking, literally. It concerns a gentleman, 57-year-old Earl Johnson, affectionately known, apparently, as “Poultry Pete,” and his rather unique approach to grocery shopping.

Seems ol’ Pete walked right into a local store, not with a wallet, mind you, but with a live rooster under his arm. This ain’t your average grocery list, is it? He tried to pay for his week’s worth of groceries, reportedly, with this fine feathered friend, whom he called “Foghorn.” Now, Pete was quite insistent Foghorn was “worth at least fifty bucks.” You gotta admire the man’s confidence, if not his grasp of modern currency. I reckon most folks are looking for a good deal on eggs or maybe some poultry accessories for their own backyard flocks, not trying to trade the rooster itself!

The cashier, bless their heart, wasn’t quite ready to accept a barnyard bird as payment, which, you know, makes a fair bit of sense. Pete got a mite agitated when his unconventional offer was refused. The local law enforcement did show up, but thankfully, no arrests were made. Pete eventually dug into his pockets and found some actual cash, probably after Foghorn failed to crow up any additional funds. He was, however, asked politely to leave the livestock at home next time. Last anyone saw, Foghorn was happily pecking away at some discarded produce in the parking lot, probably wondering what all the fuss was about. Just another day in the wonderfully weird world, ain’t it?
