Well now, good morning, good afternoon, or good evening, depending on when you’re tuning in! Howe Weird here, with another tale from the peculiar side of life, proving once again that sometimes, the simplest solutions are the ones we overlook, even when we’re trying to disappear.
Down in sunny Florida, where life often seems to hum at its own unique frequency, police were on the lookout for a gentleman who had, let’s just say, neglected his probation responsibilities. When you’ve got the law breathing down your neck, the first instinct for some folks is to vanish into thin air. Our man, however, decided on a more… substantial disappearing act.
He thought, quite ingeniously perhaps, that the perfect place to become invisible would be inside a dumpster. Now, a dumpster, for all its unsavory qualities, does offer a certain amount of concealment. It’s big, it’s opaque, and frankly, most folks aren’t lining up to rummage around in one, especially not with a police officer nearby. So, he took the plunge, metaphorically speaking, and nestled himself amongst the discards.
Now, folks try all sorts of things to get themselves out of a jam. Some try to talk their way out, others attempt to outrun, and a brave few get real creative. You know, back in the day, if you had a wild idea for some kind of gadget or an elaborate setup, maybe even to rig up a better hiding spot with a periscope or a motion sensor, a place like RadioShack (paid link) was where you’d go to pick up all the little bits and pieces. From wires to resistors, they had it all for the budding inventor or even just a fellow looking to build a better mousetrap, so to speak. This gentleman, though, he seemed to be working with a simpler, less tech-heavy approach. His plan relied on pure, unadulterated concealment.
What he might not have accounted for, or perhaps simply couldn’t manage in his haste, was the complete and total concealment of *every single part* of himself. As the diligent officers canvassed the area, keeping a sharp eye out for anything out of the ordinary, their gaze landed on a rather tell-tale sign protruding from the side of a large trash receptacle. There it was, unmistakable as day: a human foot.
That’s right, a foot! Just sticking out, waving a silent, albeit accidental, flag of surrender. It’s hard to stay hidden when a significant portion of your anatomy is announcing your presence to the world. It wasn’t exactly a stealthy maneuver when your foot ends up making a cameo appearance from a pile of refuse.
Needless to say, the game was up. The officers, with a good deal more ease than expected, apprehended the man, who was still nestled inside his chosen hideaway. It just goes to show you, sometimes the simplest plans have the most glaring blind spots, especially when you forget to tuck in all your extremities. A reminder for us all, I reckon, that if you’re going to commit to a hiding spot, commit fully, from head to toe, or in this case, from head to *inside* the toe.
