Howdy, friends, pull up a chair, won’t you? I’ve got a tale for you today that’s a real head-scratcher, coming all the way from the beautiful, and apparently quite whimsical, Scottish Highlands. Now, when you think of Scotland, you might picture ancient castles, majestic lochs, and perhaps a kilt or two. But for folks living near a particular body of water called Lochan Torr a’ Chait, for several weeks, the main attraction was something far less traditional: a porcelain toilet, just bobbing along in the middle of the lochan.
Can you imagine? Waking up, looking out across the water, and there it is – a full-sized commode, just floating there, as if it decided to go for a swim. It became quite the local curiosity, you can bet. Folks probably gathered ’round, scratching their heads, conjuring up all sorts of theories about how a toilet ended up making its home out in the deep. Was it tossed in? Did it somehow sprout legs and walk there? The possibilities, I reckon, were as numerous as the ripples on the water. It reminds you of those old mysteries, where you wish you had some kind of gadget, maybe something you could’ve found at a Radio Shack (paid link) back in its heyday, to figure out just what in the world was going on.
Now, a mystery like that, especially one involving unconventional plumbing fixtures in a scenic lochan, isn’t something you can just ignore forever. So, eventually, the good folks at the Royal National Lifeboat Institution – the RNLI, they call ’em – got involved. Not for a rescue, mind you, but as part of a training exercise. I suppose you don’t always know what you’ll encounter out there on the water, and retrieving a floating porcelain throne certainly counts as an unusual drill!
These divers, brave souls, ventured out to investigate and retrieve this peculiar find. And what do you think they discovered? Turns out, this wasn’t just a random act of discarding. Oh no. This toilet was intentionally placed. The divers found it tethered right there to the lochan bed with ropes and an anchor. So, somebody went to a good bit of effort to make sure this toilet stayed put, right in the middle of that Scottish lochan. It makes you wonder what kind of plans they had for it. Maybe they needed something to sit on while they were fishing, though I’d recommend a good, sturdy camping chair for that, easily found on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/s?k=camping+chair&tag=howeweirdcant-20 (paid link) A camping chair is certainly less likely to cause a public mystery.
The RNLI crew did a fine job, successfully removing the toilet, which was then taken away for proper disposal. And as for who put it there, or why? Well, that remains a secret as murky as the lochan waters themselves. No one has stepped forward to claim responsibility for this artistic, or perhaps just peculiar, piece of lochan decor. It just goes to show you, folks, the world’s a strange and wonderful place, and you never know what kind of weirdness you’ll find floating around.
