Good evening, friends, Howe Weird here, and today’s tale comes with the kind of airport surprise nobody wants to explain while standing under fluorescent lights with a line forming behind them.
Authorities at Turin’s Caselle airport in Italy say an Italian man is now under investigation after officials found the dried head of an endangered crocodile hidden in his luggage. According to Italy’s financial police in Turin, the passenger had arrived from Miami by way of Istanbul when officers and customs officials conducted a baggage check focused on the illegal trade of protected and endangered species.
Now, I have seen folks bring home refrigerator magnets, beach towels, and the occasional snow globe that somehow survives three airports and one overhead bin. But a crocodile head wrapped up like a parcel? That is the sort of souvenir that makes the whole customs desk lean forward at once.
Officials said the reptile’s head had been dried and wrapped in ordinary wrapping paper, which allowed it to get past security in the country where the trip began. Once Italian border authorities found it, they seized the item and opened an investigation into whether the passenger smuggled a protected-species specimen without the required certificate or license.
The possible penalties are no small matter. If convicted, the man could face a fine ranging from 20,000 to 200,000 euros, or a prison term of six months to one year. That turns a questionable keepsake into one mighty expensive conversation starter.
Crocodiles are protected under the Washington Convention, the 1973 global agreement meant to safeguard endangered plants and animals from illegal trade. Officials noted that Italy has become a hub for illegal exotic-animal trade, including activity tied to organized crime. At the same time, authorities also pointed out that tourists sometimes bring home items like dried crocodile heads from souvenir shops without realizing they are illegal.
That is a strong reminder that before packing anything unusual, especially something once attached to a critter with teeth, it pays to check the rules. A simple travel document organizer can hold your paperwork just fine, but it cannot save you from packing the wrong souvenir. And if your suitcase contains something that makes customs officers call backup, you may have wandered a long way from normal vacation memories.
