North Dakota Squirrel Turns Man’s Car into a Nutty Winter Pantry

Well now, howdy folks! Hope you’re all having a fine day, maybe enjoying a little peace and quiet. Down here in East Tennessee, we know a thing or two about critters and their ambitious plans, but I heard a story out of North Dakota recently that just about takes the cake when it comes to a creature’s dedication.

Picture this: a fellow up there, a regular guy just going about his business, starts noticing some funny things with his car. Maybe a peculiar smell, or it just wasn’t running quite right. You know the feeling, that little nagging worry that something’s amiss under the hood. So, he does the responsible thing and takes it to the mechanic.

Now, a mechanic has seen it all, or so they think. But I reckon even this seasoned professional wasn’t quite prepared for what they found when they popped open that hood. It wasn’t a loose belt, or a leaky hose, not exactly. What they found was a treasure trove, a veritable mountain of walnuts. Not just a few scattered here and there, mind you, but meticulously packed into every single available nook and cranny. We’re talking the engine manifold, tucked neatly around the battery, stuffed into the fender wells – everywhere a determined little critter could find a spot.

It turns out a squirrel, or maybe even a whole industrious family of them, had decided this gentleman’s car was the perfect, mobile winter pantry. They’d been at it for a while, too, because when the mechanics finally got all those nuts out, they filled up no less than seven five-gallon buckets. Seven! That’s an estimated hundred pounds of walnuts, folks. Can you imagine the sheer willpower of a squirrel carrying all those one by one? It truly makes you appreciate nature’s persistence, even when it’s causing a headache.

Unfortunately for the car owner, all that natural industriousness came with a price. Those walnuts, while tasty to a squirrel, caused some real damage to wires and hoses, leading to a rather hefty repair bill. The man, bless his heart, had absolutely no idea his daily driver was essentially a giant, rolling nut storage unit. Goes to show you, sometimes the biggest surprises are hiding in plain sight.

It’s a good reminder, especially if you park your vehicle outside like many of us do, to keep an eye out for these little engineers. Maybe even consider a good quality car cover (paid link) if you’re worried about critters making themselves too comfortable. It can help keep more than just the elements off your paint.

So, there you have it, another tale from the strange and wonderful world we live in. Makes you wonder what other hidden collections are out there, doesn’t it?
