When the utility crews rolled out, bright and early I reckon, to figure out what in tarnation was going on, they didn’t find a downed tree or a major equipment failure in the way you might expect.
No sir, the culprit, the mighty force that brought a town to a standstill, was none other than a squirrel. Can you believe it? A single, curious squirrel decided to embark on an adventure into a high-voltage transformer at a local substation. Now, I don’t know what kind of treasures that little critter was looking for in there – maybe he thought it was a giant acorn, or perhaps he was just checking out the latest in electrical engineering, like you might have done flipping through an old RADIO SHACK (paid link) catalog back in the day.
Well, whatever his intentions, the outcome was a big, bright flash and a significant short circuit. Unfortunately for our furry friend, that particular expedition didn’t end too well. But the important thing is, the utility folks worked fast and hard, and they managed to get power restored to most of the affected areas in just a few hours. A spokesperson for the utility company just gave a gentle reminder to folks to be mindful of all the local wildlife around electrical equipment. Seems like those squirrels are mighty curious, and sometimes that curiosity gets the better of them.
It’s just another one of those stories that makes you shake your head and chuckle a little, doesn’t it? A whole town goes dark, not because of a storm or a major breakdown, but because a little bushy-tailed adventurer had an unexpected encounter with technology.
