Sci-Fi Fans Set Vulcan Salute World Record in London

Howe Weird and little Pip in 3D cinematic style join fans making a split-finger salute for a world record

Howdy, good folks, Howe Weird here, and Pip is currently trying to make a Vulcan salute with eight legs and one tiny top hat in the way. I do not have the heart to tell him he may be overqualified.

According to UPI, sci-fi fans gathered at London’s Science Museum and broke a Guinness World Record for the most people performing a Vulcan salute at the same time. The event marked the 60th anniversary of Star Trek, and 1,188 people showed up for the attempt.

The official count came in at 934 participants holding the split-finger hand gesture for the required one minute. Now, one minute does not sound long until you are holding your hand in a position your fingers did not vote for. Pip says his legs salute naturally, but he still respects the effort.

The museum hosted the attempt on Star Trek Day, and the crowd included actor Martin Quinn, who plays Montgomery Scott in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Guinness adjudicator Paulina Sapinska said that even though the attempt lasted only a minute, it was a huge bonding moment for the fans. That sounds about right. Nothing brings people together quite like standing in a museum and collectively convincing your ring finger to cooperate.

I have always admired fans who show up for joy. Some folks collect jerseys, some bake pies, some build model trains, and some gather by the hundreds to salute a fictional future where humanity finally learns to get along. Around here, that counts as wholesome weird.

If you like celebrating the strange side of fandom, a science fiction book or a small collectibles display shelf might be your speed. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Pip says the record should include a spider division. His proposed motto: live long, stay tiny, and keep the hat on straight.
