Well now, gather ’round folks, pull up a chair if you please. Got a little yarn for you today that’s sure to make you chuckle and maybe even check your own backyard a little closer.
Down in Springfield, Missouri, a fellow named Mark Johnson was just mindin’ his own business last week, likely pourin’ himself a fresh cup of coffee and lookin’ out his kitchen window. Now, usually, you expect to see a squirrel tryin’ to outwit a bird feeder, or maybe a rabbit munchin’ on some clover. But Mark, he saw somethin’ else entirely. He had himself a visitor that looked like it’d wandered straight out of a Dr. Seuss book.
He blinked a few times, I reckon, ’cause what he was lookin’ at wasn’t no squirrel. It was a llama. Yes, a full-grown, long-necked, fluffy llama just calmly makin’ itself at home amongst his hydrangeas. Mark said he first thought it was a mighty big dog, maybe one of those new designer breeds, until it turned its head and gave him the full llama-gaze. Can you imagine? Sippin’ your coffee and there’s a llama snackin’ on your landscaping!
Now, this particular llama wasn’t causin’ a ruckus or spittin’ up a storm. It was just bein’ a llama, peaceful as you please, nibblin’ away like it owned the place. But a llama in a suburban backyard ain’t exactly a common sight, even in these parts where you see all sorts. So, Mark did the sensible thing and called up local animal control.
Those folks, bless their patience, had quite the morning on their hands. It’s one thing to wrangle a stray dog or a grumpy cat, but a creature with legs like stilts and a neck that can reach for the sky? That takes a special kind of dedication. It took several officers, a good bit of gentle persuasion, and I imagine a few ‘come here, fella’ to get that llama secured. Turns out, it was just an adventurous sort who’d managed to sneak away from a nearby farm. They got it back to its rightful owner, no harm done to man or beast, just a memorable morning for everyone involved.
Mark, he’s a good sport about it, but he did mention he might be lookin’ into some sturdier fencing these days. And maybe, just maybe, a good quality (paid link) outdoor security camera. You know, just in case another creature decides his backyard is the perfect spot for an impromptu brunch. You never know what’s gonna wander by when you live in a place with a little bit of wild still clingin’ to the edges.
