The Arecibo Message Was Earth’s Three-Minute Hello to Aliens

Howe Weird and little Pip in 3D cinematic style send a radio message toward distant stars

Howdy, neighbors, Howe Weird here, and today’s ET Week story is about the time humanity sent a postcard to space and did not include a return envelope. Pip says that is poor correspondence etiquette, but he also admits postage to a star cluster is probably steep.

In 1974, scientists used the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico to beam a short message toward M13, a globular star cluster thousands of light-years away. According to SETI and other astronomy sources, the broadcast was part of a ceremony marking a major upgrade to the telescope.

The message lasted less than three minutes and contained 1,679 bits of information. Arranged properly, those bits formed a simple pictorial message about humanity, DNA, numbers, our solar system, and the Arecibo telescope itself. It was less “Dear Aliens, please visit Tuesday” and more “Hello universe, look what we can do.”

That detail matters. The Arecibo Message was more a demonstration of technological capability than a serious attempt at back-and-forth conversation. M13 is so far away that any reply would take an extremely long time. Pip says this makes it the slowest group chat in history.

Still, there is something wonderfully human about it. We looked into the dark, gathered our math, our chemistry, our sense of wonder, and shouted politely across the galaxy. No proof anyone heard us. No guarantee anyone ever will. But for three minutes, Earth introduced itself.

Reality Check: The Arecibo Message was real. It was not a confirmed conversation with extraterrestrials, and no reply has been received. It remains one of humanity’s most famous symbolic attempts to send a message beyond Earth.

If you are interested in cosmic communication, a SETI book or a space poster might keep the wonder nearby. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Pip’s Take: “If aliens reply, I hope they use fewer bits and more snacks.”
