Today’s little sports story does not involve a touchdown, a fumble, or a marching band formation gone sideways. It involves a squirrel who wandered into the stands at Ohio State University and found the crowd a bit much.
According to UPI, police responded to the football stadium during Saturday’s game against Ball State after a squirrel made its way into the seating area and became, as officials put it, “overwhelmed.” I reckon that is understandable. A stadium full of cheering humans is a lot to take in when your usual Saturday plans involve tree branches and suspiciously buried snacks.
The Perry Township Police Department described it as a rather unusual rescue. Some helpful fans noticed the squirrel and, in a move that feels both kindhearted and very game-day, apparently tried to calm the little fellow down by feeding him pretzels. Pip said he approves of snacks as a peace offering, although he would prefer his served on something smaller than a stadium seat.
A police sergeant arrived and used a beer box to contain the squirrel, then transported it out of the stadium. Once outside, the squirrel was released to continue its day. That is a tidy ending for a critter who accidentally upgraded from neighborhood acrobat to reluctant stadium guest.
There is something wonderfully human about the whole thing. A squirrel gets lost in the stands, fans offer pretzels, and an officer turns an empty box into a wildlife taxi. If you spend much time outdoors, a small pair of binoculars can help you enjoy critters from a safer distance, and a reusable snack container might keep your pretzels from becoming emergency squirrel diplomacy.
So here’s to the overwhelmed squirrel, the fans who tried to help, and the officer who gave him a ride back to ordinary squirrel business. Pip says the lesson is simple: if you accidentally attend a football game, stay calm, accept reasonable snacks, and never underestimate the usefulness of a cardboard box.
